The agreed aim of Market Drayton Junior School is to equip every individual with skills for life and a passion for learning through the delivery of a dynamic, vibrant curriculum and inspirational innovative teaching. In 2013 the school began a move towards a skills based curriculum in which, where applicable, skills and knowledge are delivered through a thematic approach. In some curriculum areas it is more suitable to teach the content as discrete subjects and teachers are given the flexibility to allow for this. The curriculum is mapped to ensure coverage of both the National Curriculum and the school’s own additional curriculum needs.
English and mathematics are delivered in daily lessons using the National Curriculum as a framework for planning. Where applicable the context, such as the chosen text in English or the source of data in mathematics is linked to the year group’s current overall theme. R.E. lessons are planned using the Shropshire County scheme to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum and progression across the year groups. Where suitable history, geography, design technology, art, computing and music lessons are planned within a ‘context for learning’ or theme. By linking subjects together in this manner more time is provided for pupils to investigate areas of interest and deepen their understanding.
Pupils are taught in mixed ability tutor groups. Some pupils with additional learning needs are taught in specialist teaching groups during English and mathematics lessons.
