    SUMO Day - Learn Latin

On Wednesday 25th June 2014 the school took part in the final SUMO morning ‘Learn Latin’. During an amazing assembly led by Mrs Saunders the children learnt the importance of taking action using the Latin phrase ‘Carpe Diem’ or ‘Seize the Day’ in order to ensure they make the most of their lives.

One of the children, inspired by this idea has written this motivating poem:

    Carpe Diem

    Carpe Diem, seize the day

Don’t let your time waste away

The time is now, the time is right

To grab opportunities with all your might.

Yesterday has gone, tomorrow yet to be

Today is all you can guarantee

Take risks, explore the world you find

You cannot pause, you can’t rewind.

Whether you are young or old

Grasp life firmly – be bold!

    Worry not what people say

    Carpe Diem, seize the day.

    By Ethan

During the rest of the morning the children worked together to research an inspirational figure from history who is remembered for taking action and seizing the day. In addition, they created pieces of art work which showed what success might look like for them.

The final SUMO morning was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who participated in the event. Thanks go to Mrs Saunders for organising another thought provoking and memorable event.

  • Carding Mill Valley visit

    Fri 13 Jun 2014
Recently, Year 5 have been carrying out geographical enquiries based on the theme ‘Peaks and Eruptions’. Their knowledge of mountain environments was enhanced greatly by a fieldwork trip to Carding Mill Valley. National Trust volunteers led us on a guided walk around the area looking at the landscape, plant life and animals. Also, we carried out an orienteering exercise in small groups; our challenge was to use a map of the area to find numbers and clues. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip despite the weather and are now using the information gained to produce a brochure about the area.

In addition to this, we were fortunate to have a local mountaineer, Finn McCann, visit our school. Everyone enjoyed seeing the plethora of equipment needed to safely climb mountainous areas. In order to capture our interest further, he showed us photographs and video clips of the amazing areas in the world which he has visited. Finn inspired adults and pupils alike with his enthusiasm, pragmatic outlook and determination to succeed.

Year 5 teachers would like to thank the children and their parents who made such an effort to research a mountain range. The models were fantastic and the cakes were delicious – we’ve never eaten the Himalayas before!

  • Reaching High

    Thu 05 Jun 2014
On 5th June Peak Pursuits visited the school with their mobile climbing wall and high ropes course. All  the children in Year 3 and 5 had an opportunity to attempt these adventurous activities and in the process develop their self confidence in tackling new challenges.

The day was funded through use of our Sports Funding. This is a grant we have received spread over two years to encourage children to be more active and try new sports and outdoor activities. Although Year 4 and 6 children have had an opportunity to try similar challenges on this year's residential trips a number of them stayed after school to make use of the equipment. We even had some younger brother and sisters join us from the Infant School. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event and hopefully we shall be able to repeat it in the future.
  • Eco-Schools – Second Green Flag Award

    Tue 03 Jun 2014

Congratulations to the Eco-School committee and their leader, Mrs Taylor, for all their hard work regaining our Green Flag status. Every two years the school is reassessed to check whether we have continued to invest in environmental education.

We are pleased to announce that the external assessors recognised the commitment of the children and Mrs Taylor. “The work that the Eco-Committee and the school have done is outstanding, it is clearly evident that a lot of time and effort has been taken in order to get the school to eco standard that it is. They should be proud of themselves for the work they have done and I hope they continue the good work with the future Eco-Committees.”

The school is very proud of achieving our second Green Flag award and would like to say a big thank you to the Eco-Committee and Mrs Taylor.
