  • 5SL Parent Lunch

    Thu 30 Jan 2020 S Kynaston

Many thanks to the parents who attended Mrs Lomas' Parent Lunch on Wednesday 29th January. This is the feedback given to Miss Kynaston after their reading comprehension session with her:

Do you find it hard to get your child to read at home?

Varies - some yes, some no. Can depend on work commitments and clubs, more difficult at weekends.

Do you feel more confident in helping your child with reading?

    Yes

Was there a particular part of the session you found interesting?

It was all interesting and thought-provoking, great insight into the test papers, the fact they need to read books other than Tom Gates, different strategies of questioning, knowing how many words they should be reading in a minute, that I need to make sure my child lets me know words they don’t understand, working with my child to see how much they know and understand, the wording they have to read for end of KS2 tests, the way teachers tackle comprehension, realising how much of an effect the 20 minutes reading a day can have on their vocabulary, seeing Bug Club from the teacher side, how the school uses the reading dogs for questioning.

Can you think of ways to improve the session moving forward?

More examples of websites as children prefer online reading, a better way to read large words quickly, coffee! Keep it simple.

  • 6IR Parent Lunch

    Sat 25 Jan 2020 S Kynaston

Many thanks to the parents who attended Mr Richard's Parent Lunch on Friday 24th January. This is the feedback given to Miss Kynaston after their reading comprehension session with her:

Do you find it hard to get your child to read at home?

Varies - some yes, some no.

Do you feel more confident in helping your child with reading?

    Yes

Was there a particular part of the session you found interesting?

Informative and interesting! Clear information, knowing the different types of questions to ask, watching the children do a comprehension and how they tackle it, how much vocabulary can be gained from reading 20 mins a night, it made me understand that she is reading but doesn’t necessarily understand the words, to see the actual SATs questions and understand the depth they need to go into, we welcome any chance to see how the children learn, realised that Bug Club is actually good practise for SATs, realising how important it is to make sure they understand the words they are reading, seeing how the mark scheme can ask children to express their opinions as fact - they can be correct but it’s not what the mark scheme wants.

Can you think of ways to improve the session moving forward?

Keep doing what you’re doing! Tell the children to vary their reading as they don’t listen to us, time in the library to explore new authors, kids to be included in more of the session to understand importance, ask more questions, get in early and tell parents when they start at the Juniors.

  • 6GC Parent Lunch

    Fri 24 Jan 2020 S Kynaston

Many thanks to the parents who attended Miss Cartwright's Parent Lunch on Thursday 23rd January. This is the feedback given to Miss Kynaston after their reading comprehension session with her:

Do you find it hard to get your child to read at home?

    Varies - yes, no, sometimes,

Do you feel more confident in helping your child with reading?

    Yes

Was there a particular part of the session you found interesting?

Realising the high level of vocabulary the children need, knowing types of questions we can ask is useful, seeing them tackle a comprehension text and really see how their brain works! Interesting to see the reading speed expectation and how my child tackled it, the graphic which showed the impact on vocabulary reading can have, seeing the expectation at the end of Key Stage 2, can clearly see how important daily reading still is and how it is important in all subjects, we read every night but I now know we don’t read for long enough, interesting hearing my child read aloud and how much they stumbled—we need to do it more, nice to see how hard school are working to improve reading, realising they need to know the meaning of 95% of words to fully understand, the importance of reading a variety of books, not just Tom Gates,

Can you think of ways to improve the session moving forward?

More of these sessions and for other subjects, get the parents to do the comprehension at the same time and compare answers, nice to speak to other parents about reading and get their bribery tips,

  • Own It BBC app

    Thu 02 Jan 2020

The BBC have created an app to help with children's digital well being. It is called Own It and you can find out more about it here: https://www.bbc.com/ownit  and here: https://www.bbc.com/ownit/about-us/own-it-app-guide .

It’s really important that children lead a happy and healthy life online, but that balance can become tricky when they get their hands on their phone.

Maybe their phone notifications are keeping them up at night. Or maybe they’re not sure what information is safe to share online? Or maybe the ‘banter’ is getting a little bit out of hand in the group chat?

The BBC Own It app can help, by giving children advice and guidance when they need it the most. The app has a special keyboard that can be used like any other keyboard – to type messages to friends, post on social media or search online – and the clever bit happens while they are typing.

The keyboard uses special technology to check what’s being typed, and gives feedback and support, helpful tips and friendly advice. The BBC Own It app also has a diary feature where children can track how they’re feeling.

Everything that a child types using the keyboard is kept completely private, and never leave the app on their device. That means that children can use the keyboard, add notes and track their emotions without worrying about who might see.

Your child can download the app from the Apple App or the Google Play Stores.
