  • John Muir Award

    Thu 17 Jul 2014

Throughout the summer term, the John Muir award has been undertaken by 22 lucky Year 5 pupils and 2 lucky teachers!

We have discovered, explored and conserved a natural area that is important to us and then put together an assembly to share our experiences with our friends and our families. Undeterred by the awful weather during our first session, we have been out in our school’s nature area for four full days, even picnicking outdoors at lunch time. The conservation element of our award has seen us clearing the pond and saving the newly planted trees and hedge row by clearing much of the long grass growing around the base of the trees, ensuring that the competition for water is minimised. We have splashed in the rain and created our own mud packs; we’ve conserved anthills and discovered newts; we’ve built dens and made fire; we’ve worked together and had quiet, alone time to reflect on our achievements.

And, of course, we’ve learned all about John Muir, the man. Living in Scotland, in the 1800s, Muir was an inventor by trade. An explosion at work damaged his eyes and left him blind – the doctors said that he would never see again.

Amazingly, his eye-sight did return and at that point Muir decided that the world was too beautiful to miss and so he set off to see it. He packed a bag containing only 4 books, a bar of soap and a towel, and he began his epic journey. For two years, and 1000 miles, he walked, not stopping to talk to anyone as he worried that contact with society would detract from his mission to fully immerse himself in nature.

We have all really enjoyed our time spent connecting with our natural surroundings and are tremendously proud of everything that we have achieved in conserving this vital and valuable part of our school.

  • Boy's Dance Project

    Sat 12 Jul 2014

On Saturday 12th July 2014 twenty-two boys from Market Drayton Junior School joined sixty-three other boys to take part in an exhilarating live dance performance at the Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury. The boys had all volunteered to participate in a boy’s only project called No Man’s Land. Choreographed by professional dance artist, Mark Anderson, the dance was created to commemorate the 100 years since the start of the First World War. It was designed to honour and remember the lives of those who served in and were affected by the War.

After training with Mark for several weeks the boys spent the Saturday afternoon rehearsing with the other boys for the performance that night. The finale of the day was watched by 300 proud parents and spectators as the boys showed off their amazing energy and talents. The dancers, to a very moving sound track, performed a moving and evocative dance to represent the ‘fallen’.

Congratulations must go to all the boys who performed – they should feel very proud of their efforts and talents. The school would like to say a big thank you to them all for their hard work. In addition, we would like to say thank you to Mrs Taylor, for organising the boy’s participation in the event. As well as Mrs Hughes and Mrs Saunders for joining her on the Saturday to supervise the boy’s during their very exciting day. Finally, thank you to all the parents who supported the event - I am sure you had a fantastic experience watching the boy’s too.

  • New website design

    Fri 04 Jul 2014
Apologies to everyone who has tried to find our website recently; we had a few days when it wasn't appearing as normal. This was because it has recently been upgraded. It may appear very similar externally, but it is now much easier to add new content. We have tried to make the Latest News section, on the Homepage, easier to see too. Please keep checking out the website. Thank you.
  • Kwik Cricket Win

    Tue 01 Jul 2014

On Tuesday 1st July, 18 children travelled to Market Drayton Cricket Club to take part in a Kwik Cricket Tournament.

The children were split into two teams of 9 for the competition with both of our teams being placed into Group A against three other teams. During the group matches, Team A won two and lost two of their matches and Team B won three and lost one, which meant they finished on top of their group.

As a result of topping their Group Team B proceeded to the final where they were against Norton in Hales school. After an extremely closely fought contest, which went down to the last ball, we were fortunate enough to win the overall competition.

All the children enjoyed their day; as well as having lots of laughs, team building, game time together, with the gingerbread being an added bonus!!

Since returning from the competition it has been lovely to hear such positive praise about our school. I received an email stating that ‘You have really got a great bunch of kids with some fantastic bowlers and they really do both themselves, you and your school proud.’  It is fantastic to hear such praise for our school and all the children who participated should feel quite rightly proud of their achievements.
